The ancient vines of Adelina Molettieri

Adelina Molettieri is converting her old vines to become organically certified and produces an Aglianico di Irpinia – Cesinè 2011 – that has a strong personality.
Montemarano, better-known as “the Land of Aglianico”, is home to over 300 hectares of vineyards cultivated by a host of producers who make wines that communicate this land’s centuries of tradition. In Chianzano, a hilly district of Montemarano, are the vineyards that Adelina Molettieri inherited from her father and which were re-grafted onto the ancient rootstocks that survived the phylloxera plague in the early 1900s. This family-run estate is being converted to be certified organic and still has some vines that are “tennecchia” trained, the old Etruscan method of having the vines grow upwards rather than horizontal, and Adelina has every intention of maintaining this tradition.
Her four hectares of vineyards are almost entirely of Aglianico with small parcels of Fiano and Coda di Volpe. While waiting for her Taurasi, which will come out at the end of this year, I tasted this Aglianico that has a lot of personality and a strong imprint of the terroir.
