Chianti Classico Il Palagio di Panzano
The young and organic Il Palagio estate is in Panzano and Monia Piccini is enthusiastic about what they do. And their Chianti Classico 2013 shows they have what it takes.
The Il Palagio estate in Panzano is in my favorite area in Chianti and I always go there with pleasure. This young estate run by women has improved significantly. It is situated on the more Florentine side of Panzano, practically on the opposite one of Fontodi. The estate has eight hectares of vineyards almost all planted with Sangiovese except for a small plot of Merlot, a legacy of Monia Piccini’s father who founded the estate.
The estate is now a beautiful holiday farm with a pool, which flickered on the hot day I visited, and a winery without any “special effects” or useless frills. There is a room for fermentation and two for maturing in wood that include tonneau barrels, 25-30hl Slavic oak vats and a very interesting series of 10hl mixed oak barrels. The winery’s market is mostly abroad.
Among the wines we tasted I very much liked the Chianti Classico 2013 that is already on the market. The estate is certified organic.
