Lugana Vigneti

Lugana is the Garda white wine that makes drinkability its atout. The slight aromaticity is due to the Turbiana (Trebbiano di Lugana) grape variety that is its soul.

We have already spoken several times about Lugana, the white wine from Lake Garda, to be clear, that is, which is produced on the southern shore of the Lake, both in Veneto and Lombardy. An interregional appellation, then, which rightly sees a unique territory, characterized by similar soils and microclimate.

The real difference lies in the quantitative ratios: the Lombardy part of the denomination sees a predominance in terms of extension, both because as many as four out of five of the municipalities involved (Desenzano, Sirmione, Pozzolengo and Lonato) are located in the province of Brescia and in terms of the area planted with vines (as many as 1,948 hectares of the more than 2,000 current). In contrast, the Veneto part, which includes only the municipality of Peschiera del Garda, holds the record in commercial volume, since 60 percent of bottled wine is handled by Veronese producers.

Therefore, for par condicio, we present one producer from Lombardy and one from Veneto. Although there is a catch: both have vineyards in Desenzano sul Garda, Lombardy.

Podere Selva Capuzza has 30 hectares under vine, run by Luca Formentini, including white and red DOC, still and sparkling wines from Lake Garda. From the vineyards and winery there is a view of the tower of San Martino della Battaglia, a monument that leaves an indelible memory of the past history of this area. The Formentini family offers tours and guided tastings but also catering and lodging in Cascina Capuzza, a place where quiet reigns supreme.

A large and famous winery in the Veneto that has been in existence for more than a century, Tommasi Viticoltori produces a wide range of labels dedicated both to Veronese DOC wines, to which 90 hectares of vineyards are dedicated, and the Valpolicella Classica DOCs, where the family owns 105 hectares. Investments in the Lugana district, in the municipality of Desenzano, led the Tommasi family to purchase 45 hectares, now planted with vines, and also include a structure dedicated to hospitality and wine tourism.

With the entry of the fourth generation since 1997, in fact, the Tommasi family has begun a series of investments outside the Veneto region as well: in Oltrepò Pavese in Lombardy, Montalcino and Maremma in Tuscany, Manduria in Apulia, Vulture in Basilicata, and now Etna.
