Disisa: ottimi bianchi siciliani

I discovered Feudo Disisa during my last tour of Sicily organized by Assovini during the Sicilia en Primeur event. The estate has some 400 hectares of land of which around 200 are vineyards. For years the estate used to sell its grapes but then decided to bottle its own wines around the last turn of the century. The winery is efficient and functional using modern technology and a vast collection of barrels ranging from barriques to classic, medium-sized barrels. The baglio farmhouse is very lovely and used to serve as the estate’s headquarters.

Recent changes in the technical staff, with Tonino Guzzo being put in charge, lifted the already high quality level of the wines. The most radical changes have involved the production of the white wines that are for the most part produced with native grapes, primarily Grillo, Inzolia and Catarratto. The winery also produces an interesting Bordeaux-bled which I can assure - after tasting nine vintages from the barrel – has a great future ahead of it. For now they offer a nice blend of Cabernet and Merlot in equal parts together with 50% Syrah, making it a wine of the first revolution in Sicilian winemaking.

The estate also produces some lovely, aromatic olive oil that purists may turn their noses up at but which your taste buds will thoroughly enjoy.
