1962-1922: Lungarotti's iconic Rosso di Torgiano to celebrate 60 years launches a limited collector's edition of the 2019 vintage, only in magnum.

Sixty years have passed - it was 1962 - since the first vintage of Rubesco Lungarotti was released on the market.  At that time little or nothing was said about Umbrian wine and this red wine made of Sangiovese and Colorino produced in Torgiano made people talk about it, having an unexpected success both in Italian and foreign markets, to the point that during the years it became one of the most popular Umbrian labels in the world. This was the beginning of the process which led to the birth of the first DOC wine of Umbria in 1968. Today the winery celebrates this anniversary with a limited edition of 3,300 magnums with the 2019 vintage of the wine, with a special total-black dress embellished with golden details.

Created by Giorgio Lungarotti, one of the fathers of modern Italian enology and founder of the winery in Torgiano, a small rural village near Perugia and Assisi, Rubesco was an innovative wine for those times and it was immediately noticed for its great personality. Deep expression of Umbria, of its hills and of its people, it was born from a new way of cultivating vines, of which Giorgio Lungarotti was a pioneer, and of making wine from traditional varieties not in an approximate way, as it was used to do, but in a scientific way.

The name Rubesco derives from the Latin verb rubescere, to blush with joy, and was born from a happy intuition of Maria Grazia Marchetti, Giorgio's wife, who was inspired by what happens when you drink a good glass of red wine in company.

Over the years, the label has changed, according to the graphic taste of the times, but always proposing strong references to the territory: from the very first labels on which appears the tower of Torgiano, to the allegory of the grape harvest reproduced in one of the panels of the Fontana Maggiore of Perugia by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano (13th century) present on labels from 1970 until today. A choice which proposes again the binomial between wine and art so dear to the Lungarotti family which, not by chance, already in 1974 inaugurated in Torgiano the Wine Museum (MUVIT) defined by the New York Times as "the best in Italy" for the quality of the artistic collections exposed.

The winery is not new to special labels: also for the 2017 vintage of Rubesco a Special Edition had been created in 350 magnums with a label signed by the eclectic artist Massimiliano Donnari, in art MaMo, and accompanied by the "Scatolo", a package with a coordinated design. The exclusive edition was linked to the exhibition "Muvit Mamo Moo - A red thread between art and wine", realized in January 2020, which saw 16 works by the Perugian artist on display both at the Wine Museum (Muvit, 8 canvases) and at the Olive and Oil Museum (Moo) of the Lungarotti Foundation.

For Chiara Lungarotti, managing director of the group: "Art and wine are a union that has always characterized Lungarotti's identity, starting from the Foundation's commitment in the Torgiano Museums, dedicated to the millenary culture of oil and wine, up to the collaborations with contemporary artists. A contamination which, together with our wines, allows us to export in the world the history and culture of Umbria and of the Mediterranean".
