Heimbourg in the hands of Zind Humbrecht

The Heimbourg vineyard in Turckheim, Alsace, is a kind of unofficial Grand Cru, from which Zind Humbrecht creates great wine.

At the time of the controversial classification of Alsace Grand Cru in 1975, which among other things did not foresee the intermediate classification of Premier Cru and was dictated by economic considerations and power, the Heimbourg vineyard in Turckheim, was not – surprisingly – at the top. However, when you speak with the greatest experts of Alsace wine, you will be told that this was a paradox similar to that of Perrières in Meursault, Burgundy, which is a Grand Cru vineyard to all effects but got caught in the quicksand of bureaucracy and history.

With its western exposure, steep incline and limy-clay soil, Heimbourg produces expressive wines that even when young are bold and exotic with an impressive propensity to age.

In the hands of Zind Humbrecht, who for over 30 years has remained the Alsace producer who best balances muscle with intricacy (as well as being one of the world’s greatest white winemakers), one call always expect the best. And at prices that, all things considered, are quite reasonable.

Alsace Pinot Gris Heimbourg 2014

Made from Pinot Gris grapes and matured in large barrels, the wine has a golden color with vague, copper reflections. The open and intense bouquet has scents of peach jam, quince apple, pear peel, spice bread, flint and a hint of lychees almost like a Gewürztraminer. The attack of the mouthfeel is creamy and full-bodied with a perfectly integrated sweetness, to later close dry and subtle on notes of quince apple and flint.

The structure and aromatic exuberance are not misleading: the great Alsace Pinot Gris are extraordinary table wines. From our experience, they are perhaps the absolute best whites for “important” white meats like guinea fowl and veal.
