Harvest began on October 9. The growing season saw a bad frost in the spring followed by excellent weather in June, July and August, while poor conditions in September had compromised the final stages of ripening.

The wine has a very concentrated and luminous garnet color while the aroma is mineral and fruity with notes of candied orange, violet and cinchona. The mouthfeel is full-bodied for a Gattinara with dry tannins and a dry finish. With breathing this 2005 takes on more nuances but the tannins tend to ‘nail’ the wine. I doubt whether aging will resolve these problems but I’m ready to drink it just the same. Certainly a great but not an exceptional vintage. When it came out it met with favorable reviews from critics.
