A blend that was exceptionally centered on Pinot Noir, 50%, with 36% Chardonnay and 14% Pinot Meunier. This was determined following a year that saw one of the coldest winters in 15 year followed by a hot and dry summer that produced a harvest with a 9.8% alcohol potential and 7.3% overall acidity. After sitting for seven years on the lees, a 5g/l dosage was given and while this was the same as in the past, this vintage was the first to be labeled as Extra Brut. The reason for this was probably because the cuvée was primarily produced for sale in restaurants, wine bars and wine shops, since Grand Vintage is never sold in supermarkets.
In the glass, the wine has a bright, golden color and an exuberant bouquet of ripe yellow fruit and intense notes of dark citrus fruits like myrtle-leaved orange and clementine, together with scents of red currant and raspberry, nuances of rhubarb and tamarind and barley and toasted almonds in the background. The mouthfeel has a persistent and almost biting notes of Pinot Noir and while there is a grapey boldness it is surprisingly lively with a wrapping and spicy profundity that maintains its freshness and elegance with a decidedly generous persistence.
