Trattoria Sora Lella Roma

The trattoria of Elena Fabrizi, sister of the famous Aldo, never disappoints: for more than 80 years she has been delighting Romans and tourists with a cuisine of flavor, strength, substance. She, unforgettable in some of Verdone's films, is no longer at the cash register, but the family carries on the restaurant in keeping with the "Sora Lella" approach.

As a resident of Rome for years, I must admit my fault: having gone to eat at Sora Lella's far too late.

The legendary Sora Lella, Elena Fabrizi, sister of the great actor and gastronome Aldo Fabrizi, is in the hearts of Italians thanks to her fine appearances in some of Carlo Verdone's films. But to the Roman people she was already known for her talents as a great cook of traditional Roman cuisine and for her sanguine hosting of some very popular radio programs in the then fledgling local radio stations.

Ecco, la Trattoria Sora Lella è il locale fondato da lei nel 1940, dove i suoi familiari continuano a tenere in alto la cucina romana tradizionale.

The cuisine, as it should be for true Roman cuisine, is one of flavor, of strength, of substance, where the innards, the famous quinto quarto, are often the main ingredient. So, just as examples, go with appetizers: Carciofo alla romana, Carciofo alla giudìa, Fiori di zucca ricotta e alici, tender Polpette al sugo. Continue with Ravioli di ricotta cacio e pepe, Gnocchi di patate alla matriciana and splendid Rigatoni con la pajata. But the real absolute triumph, in my opinion, we reached with Coda alla vaccinara and Trippa alla romana. And if you really make it, you can finish with the very good Zabaione and also the Chocolate Salami. In short, if you want you can go a la carte, or choose from the Tasting Menus. Either way you will be very satisfied.

Wine list focused on labels from the region, with also good national and international offerings. For us incontentatible oenophaniacs, more could be done but still the offer is good and with a positive price/quality ratio. Also available are nice and different glasses to taste the different types of wines (something I always appreciate very much).

The trattoria is on Tiberina Island, in the heart of Rome: on two levels, with a total of about 40 covers. Tables well set but no frills, service courteous, warm, not plastered, still efficient.

Finally a recommendation: make reservations well in advance, the Trattoria is often fully booked.
