Tourism among the vineyards

Mangiare e Dormire tra i vigneti

You know it, you read it everywhere: wine tourism is on the rise. So let's take advantage of the upcoming weekends and beyond (the weather will recover) and explore wineries where you can also stay.

I believe that the coming months, June and July in particular, are the perfect time to engage in tourism among the vineyards. There are hundreds of wineries offering accommodations in simply splendid places, among the most beautiful countryside in the world and with a truly remarkable level of comfort. In the book Eating and Sleeping Among the Vineyards, published by DoctorWine, you can find many recommendations. Here I would like to propose three of them, among the most beautiful I know. Places that I have personally visited and that have remained in my heart and eyes. Then, for each of the wineries I also recommend a wine of their production so the circle is closed.

The first stop is in Monforte d'Alba, Langa, in the heart of Barolo. A B&B literally surrounded by vineyards. It is that of Paolo Boffa's Cascina Amalia, which, in addition to making simply spectacular wines, such as the 2018 Barolo Le Coste di Monforte, has also created this tiny structure with just seven rooms and where you can taste, in addition to the wines, jams, cheeses, and locally produced salumi. A marvel, in short.

We move to Tuscany and I assure you that this report is worth its weight in gold. In the Montecucco area, south of Montalcino but already in Maremma, more exactly in the town of Cinigiano, in the province of Grosseto, there is a dream place. It is called Tenute di Montecucco and consists of several structures within a fully restored 14th-century hamlet. Twenty-two rooms, including apartments and suites, and a panorama that to call marvelous doesn't quite make the point. Owned by the ColleMassari winery, which also has famous wineries in Bolgheri (Grattamacco) and Montalcino (Poggio di Sotto and San Giorgio). The flagship wine of the production is the Montecucco Sangiovese Poggio Lombrone Riserva, a showstopper, but you will find many others and all excellent.

Third and final stop in Abruzzo, in Loreto Aprutino. We are inland in the province of Pescara, between the sea and the Gran Sasso. Right here is La Masseria del Vino of the Ciavolich family, famous for their Montepulciano and Pecorino wines, and for some time now also for this delightful "rural" relais. Just six deluxe rooms in an unmissable place. Then there are the wines. Of all of them, I'll point out the 2015 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Fosso Cancelli. A true standout of its kind.
