San Felice, Pugnitello paladin
After year of experiments in vineyard and in the cellar, since 2003 San Felice proposes a red wine produced with Pugnitello grapes, an old vine ri-discovered cooperating with the Universities of Florence and of Siena.
In the second half of the eighties, San Felice, a winery located in Chianti Classico area, planted a sperimental vineyard (called Vitiarum) for an ampelographic research run by the Universities of Florence and of Pisa led to the identification and valorization of old local variety. Among dozen and dozen of vines, only a few are now part of the national register of vine varieties by the Ministry of Agriculture: Pugnitello is one of these since 2003. Following analytical tests on DNA it was proved there were no correspondences with others vines.
Pugnitello is a vigorous variety, with a low productivity, and small cluster. It produces a wine really rich in red color with violet hues, well-structured with soft tannins that predispose it to age.
