Saffredi in great form in London (3)

Here we are with the latest vintages, starting with 2010 and moving towards the 30th anniversary harvest, which will come out on the market next year.
While the previous decade was distinguished by the French hand of Le Sommer, this last decade of the new millennium has that of winemaker Luca D’Attoma, who initially could only intervene to determine the final blend but since the 2012 he has been fully responsible for all stages of production, from the vineyards through the winery.
The last vintage we tasted in preview, 2017, marks the thirtieth anniversary of this great wine, as underlined by the label.
Saffredi Maremma Toscana Igt 2010
95/100 - € 90
Cool and wet throughout the year causing the grapes to ripen late and the harvest to be delayed. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Syrah (determined by D’Attoma) and an intense, ruby color with excellent concentration. The fruit in the aroma is clear and rich, nicely expressed, ethereal with notes of kirsch and some hints of spice. The bold mouthfeel has a nice acidity, tannins that are a tad too evident and a taut, warm and persistence.

Saffredi Maremma Toscana Igt 2011
95/100 - € 85
Alternating weather with heat waves broken up by cooler temperatures and heavy rains at the end of June. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Syrah (selected by Luca D’Attoma) that has a very intense and bright ruby color. The bouquet is wrapping and ethereal, slightly evolved with notes of prune preserved in alcohol and those of spice. The acidic salinity nicely upholds a significantly heavy mouthfeel that is warm, bold and has an excellent persistence. At this moment it is having its best season. A middle distance runner.

Saffredi Maremma Toscana Igt 2012
90/100 - € 90
A mild and wet spring followed by a hot and dry summer. The grapes had thick skins rich in polyphenols that gave the wine great structure. This was the first year when enologist Luca D’Attoma was fully in charge. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot (replacing Syrah for the first time) that has an intense and very concentrated ruby color. The ethereal aroma has spice and nicely and clearly expressed fruit, while in the mouthfeel the tannins are a little too evident but it is saline and warm, although a bit hard with a long persistence.

Saffredi Maremma Toscana Igt 2013
96/100 - € 80
Spring temperatures were below normal and the summer had no heat waves while thot temperatures in September allowed for an excellent harvest. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot with an intense and limpid ruby color. The nose is very intense, clear and fine with notes of kirsch followed by light spice and balsamic hints, all very fine. The mouthfeel is agile, taut and elegant with perfect tannins and an excellent drinkability along with a long and bold finish. Very good.

Saffredi Maremma Toscana Igt 2015
97/100 - € 80
Spring saw rain and strong winds but mild temperatures followed by a hot and dry summer with light rain at the end of August and beginning of September making this overall a good year. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot with a very intense, ruby color. The aroma is wrapping and complex, spicy, clear, promising and youthful with ethereal hints. The bold and agile mouthfeel has tannins that are still youthful but not drying with a warm and very persistent finish. This could age very well.
Bottles produced: 40,000.
Saffredi Maremma Toscana Igt 2016

A cool and rather wet spring followed by a summer with sharp temperatures variations resulting in slow and proper ripening. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot with a very intense and concentrated ruby color. A wrapping and ethereal aroma, slightly alcoholic, with well-expressed fruit along with some spice and hints of coffee powder. The mouthfeel is bold, rich and warm with over-the-top tannins. A wine with good potential but still very young.

Saffredi Maremma Toscana Igt 2017
95/100 - € 80
An early season that was hot with no rain. Being situated between forests and the sea, the vineyards were able to weather the heat and the harvest was excellent. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot with a very intense and concentrated ruby color. The ethereal aroma has notes of kirsch, clear and balsamic, followed by those of roasted coffee. The tannins are very evident, youthful and nicely upheld by the acidity within a warm, bold and “Californian” mouthfeel.
Bottles produced: 35,000.
