Ippolito 1845: a Cirò at an unbelievable price

If you’re looking for a robust and “old-style” red then Cirò Rosso Classico 2013 from Ippolito1845 is a great buy at only 6 euros.
Cirò is a mountain wine made by the sea and it could not be anything else since Calabria is basically a mountain chain washed by the Mediterranean. Cirò wine has everything it needs to be appreciated by wine lovers: a bold body with a unique, warm and earthy personality; an ‘antique’ temperament with no concessions towards fads, at least with the more characteristic wines like this one.
Ippolito 1845 was the first estate to bottle the region’s greatest red wine and while its Cirò 2013 may not stand out for the finesse of its tannins, for those who can overlook this it is a find because it is very rare to find so much character at the price of a pint of beer.
