Farmers unwilling to compromise

Agricoltori senza compromessi

I do not personally know brothers Franco and Mario Accorsi but met them at the ceremony where their Lambrusco Incantabiss was given an award during the Palio del Lambrusco event in Torrile which I founded. In the selection of craft Lambrusco wines, theirs stood for its quality and personality.

Their Fondo Bozzole Vecchie winery is in Poggio Rusco, in the Mantua province, and while their winemaking philosophy appears to be one of “uncompromising organic farmers” this disguises their great ability to blend into the environment and nature. But it is their wine that best defines them.

Every year their wine improves technically and it has now reached a laudable level of expression. The vineyards have an absurdly low yield (6,000-7,000kg/ha, less than half the maximum allowed) and are cared for with maniacal dedication and respect for nature. The agronomic approach is revolutionary with vines that are Guyot-trained, something rare for the area and the varietal.

Their manifesto reads as follows:

To be a farmer for us goes far beyond climbing on a tractor, it means being part of Nature, to observe it, let is exist without trying to compete with it.

To be a farmer for us entails the awareness that food comes from the land and the infinite relations and synergies that exist between the soil, animals, plants, water, the sun and darkness, between the visible and the invisible.

To be a farmer for us means knowing for certain that you can offer a good, healthy and quality product because we have understood that everything we need derives from Nature”.
