Terre di Seta - Siena

We are in the southwestern area of the denomination, the one closest to Siena, and we present the 2019 Chianti Classico wines from two estates of remarkable quality: Terra di Seta and Vallepicciola.

The Chianti Classico area is very large, and well done the Consortium has brought forward the division of the territory into geographical units (the famous Uga), which better explain the infinite facets that this geographical breadth entails. The DOCG area covers 70,000 hectares, which include in its entirety the municipalities of Castellina in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti, Greve in Chianti, Radda in Chianti and in part those of Barberino Tavarnelle, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Poggibonsi and San Casciano in Val di Pesa. As is easy to imagine, this vastness must necessarily correspond to organoleptic diversity.

Although the Uga are for now applicable only to the Gran Selezione type, we like to think in terms of terroir also with regard to Chianti Classico vintages. We present two from Uga di Valgiagli, which is in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, the extreme southern edge of the district, in this case in the western part, the one closest to Siena, to be clear. Here the hills seem to mellow and decrease southward in a very progressive way, "opening up" the landscape, although the altimetry tells that we are still around 400 meters above sea level.

Driving along the road from Vagliagli to Pievasciata, one comes across the Terra di Seta farm. The place is one of those that take your breath away. A theater of vineyards with the outline of Siena in front of it that looks as if you could touch it. All this on hills that touch 500 meters in height and are exposed to a light, continuous breeze. This is the landscape. Then there are Daniele Della Seta and Maria Pellegrini, a couple in life and in work, who offer their splendid wines, certified kosher, and who welcome guests to the Le Macie farmhouse with an adjoining restaurant, where you can taste their wines, their extra virgin olive oil and their honeys, which are no less. The advice is only one: go and visit them.

Continuing on and passing Pievasciata, in one of the most beautiful countryside of the Sienese area, you will find the Vallepicciola winery and it is simply a heavenly corner created by Bruno Bolfo, which includes not only the 6000-square-meter winery, officially opened in July 2020, but also a wonderful five-star hotel called Le Fontanelle. The wines, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione and Quercegrosse Merlot above all, are beginning to be decidedly interesting and the production potential very important.

The two Chianti Classico wines we have chosen are very different from each other, presenting the first with agility and the second with structure, but they both tell the beauty of their territory of origin.
