Three white wines for the 15th of August

There are hundreds of wines that can be chosen for summer nights, we suggest three of them, two unusual ones for the ones who love to change and a reassuring one, for the ones who do not want to venture too much.

How do you choose a wine? There can be thousands of ways and thousands of evaluations and the claim of suggesting the right wines for a specific occasion is, indeed, a claim. We will therefore limit ourselves to some suggestions, based on some of our evaluations. Often we are dragged by habit and we choose wines we know well, in order to be on the safe side. So we decided to mix up the cards, suggesting two wines that are not very well known and a third one that everyone can agree on.

Let's start with the two unusual ones, the first one is from the Marches, but not the main wine of the region, Verdicchio, but a less common but surely very good white wine that our readers are getting to know: Bianchello del Metauro. As for the second wine, we always stay on the Adriatic coast, but we go down to Apulia, where the Fiano Minutolo grape, which has nothing to do with Campania's Fiano but probably is related to Muscat, offers very fresh and aromatic wines. The third wine we are proposing instead, as we said, is "reassuring": a chardonnay produced in the homeland of Italian chardonnay, that is Trentino, the region with the largest area of vineyards dedicated to this grape.

Let's start with Bianchello and the winery which produces it, Fiorini from Marche region. Historical winery for the territory, it is now run by Carla Fiorini who has decisively taken over the baton left by her father Valentino and grandfather Luigi. The winery is located in Barchi, one of the "castles" which separate the Metauro valley from the Cesano valley. It offers many types, all from the area, but the flagship is the Bianchello del Metauro Superiore, a small champion of its type, with an exemplary quality/price ratio.

Let's go further south, to Giancarlo Ceci. Biodynamic certification arrived in 2011 and this makes this winery one of the most important realities of that category in Apulia. The wines presented, all coming from vineyards in the Castel del Monte area, are surprising for their reliability and for their impeccable technical realization, something that disproves the rumors that often accompany wines made with eco-sustainable systems. In this Giancarlo Ceci really succeeds in surprising and in showing that respect for environment and high quality can and must go hand in hand.

Let's close this very quick examination in Trentino, where we find this great second level cooperative, which markets and partly produces wines resulting from the grapes of thousands of direct wine growers or of other eleven cooperative wineries of Trentino. Cavit is a real regional production system, in its very modern winery pass three quarters of Trentino's wine and from its performance simply depends the agricultural income of thousands of families. Wines, in particular in the sparkling wine sector, are at least correct, at most extraordinary. From about 800,000 quintals of processed grapes it is even easy to make selections of the highest level. However, in the vast range of products it produces, it is not difficult to find respectable still wines as well, such as the ones of the Bottega Vinai line.

Intense and very nice golden yellow color with green hues. Shiny aromas of ripe yellow fruits, citrus and intriguing spiciness. Coherent and rich taste, yet agile and fresh of impressive persistence. A truly great version.

Fiano Clara 2018 - Giancarlo Ceci Agrinatura

100% Fiano Minutolo grapes. Matures 10 months in big barrels.

Lively golden yellow color. Slightly aromatic notes of wildflowers, litchi and yellow citrus. Savory and tense taste, good body but agile, Mediterranean, surprisingly easy to drink, well sustained by a fresh acidity. Briny and pleasant finish.

Trentino Chardonnay Bottega Vinai 2019 - Cavit

Bright straw yellow color. Clear, fragrant and fruity, very varietal aromas of peach, hints of almond, apricot and exotic fruits. Fresh, savory and very agile taste. Simple yet delicious drinkability. Unique quality/price ratio.
