The Pampini estate and the Bellone of Latina

This native varietal is seeing an important resurgence in the area of Pontina.

Last November’s three-day Excellence event in Rome was a decidedly interesting one for both the food and wine producers taking part. It was also an important focus for the many cooking shows that are currently enjoying success. This edition took place inside the Fukas Nuvola convention center which has ample space and is very beautiful, even if parking is a problem.

The wine discovery at the event was the Pampini estate, which was founded in 1999 near the city of Latina, in the area of Acciarella, by Carmen Iemma and Enzo Oliveto. The estate is near the sea and is very functional without being overly technological with passion and commitment producing interesting results. The vines are pruned-spur cordon-trained and the varietals were planted depending on the soil while the vineyard density is around 4,000 vines per hectare, an example of how proper care of vines can produce good results without attempting to be anything phenomenal.

One wine particularly impressed me: Bellone, made from the white grape the same name typical to the Lazio region that is also known as Cacchione, which has the advantage of having a good quality/price ratio.

Bellone Non Filtrato 2018

Made from Bellone grapes and matured on the lees in cement vats for a few months without being filtered when bottled. A bright, straw color and an intense floral aroma with hints of pineapple and medlar. The mouthfeel has a medium texture and is flowing, flavorful and saline with great balance and drinkability and a persistent finish.
