My Morellino, 2022 Previews
Tasting the Morellino di Scansano 2021 and the 2019 Reserves shows an incredible growth in quality, and the price remains extremely competitive.
It may seem superb La mia Africa style to use the pronoun mio, but for someone who has lived in Scansano for years, it is not completely out of place. It has always made me feel extremely comfortable and pampered to live in a place that is the territory of excellence for the Morellino di Scansano Docg appellation.
The temperature swings of summer evenings that give Sangiovese di Scansano richness and elegance to its aromas, I enjoyed them too, recovering from the scorching heat of the day. The Maremma has an intense, wild charm, and here nature often surprises you. I remember one evening, returning home by car, a hare showed me the way for miles. Horseback riding, passing through the rows of Castello di Montepò, through rushing woods and quiet, magical glades, and then stopping at Terenzi's for a picnic, stays in your heart. Personally getting to know many producers who later became friends and let me experience the world of Morellino firsthand was an unforgettable experience.
I tell this story because when Stefania Vinciguerra asked me to go and preview Morellino 2021 and the 2019 Riserva, it was a bit like coming home for me. To taste Morellino is to relive a stupendous territory that goes from the hills to the sea and that gives us small ambassadors of this heterogeneity and stylistic richness enclosed in only 1,500 hectares of vineyards and no less than 350 wineries, 200 of which are associated with the Consortium.
A denomination that made Maremma famous twenty years ago, Morellino has grown incredibly in quality while maintaining an extremely competitive price.
It is an explosion of crisp, intense fruit in Morellino 2021, without excessive general overripeness, an excellent vintage. The 2019 Riserva is complex and worthy of aging.
