Librandi, the essence of enological Calabria

For nearly 70 years the Librandi family has been a major player in the Calabrian wine world, and although the region now hosts other excellent producers, it does not seem to want to relinquish the scepter.

Few wineries in Italy have a fundamental significance for the region to which they belong: Librandi is one of them. the winery that has brought attention to the region since the late 1980s, when in addition to classic wines such as Cirò Riserva Duca Sanfelice it proposed Gravello, a sort of Calabrian super from GLibrandi is oenological Calabria:aglioppo and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes that burst into the Italian and foreign wine world like a lightning bolt. 

In these two so different and important wines there is not only Calabrian wine history but also the "thinking" that has always guided the Librandi family: tradition and continuous research. The Librandi's are in their third generation, represented by the young Raffaele, Francesco, Paolo and Teresa whom we see in the events, Walter and Daniela more homely. Over all the great genius Nicodemo Librandi who represents the second generation.

The "research" produced by the Librandi's, in collaboration with Italian universities and great professionals, has meant that the understanding of Gaglioppo has improved significantly, that the recovery of more than 200 native grape varieties present in the experimental Spiral Field did not remain within the company, but was "given" to Calabrian producers. So studies on clones, rootstocks, types of training systems and their interactions with different types of soils are public. A sign of great love for one's region. 

On our last visit we did a triple mini-vertical of 3 wines: Megonio, 100% sweet Magliocco, Gravello, 60% Gaglioppo and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and Efeso, a pure Mantonico vinified in wood, unobtainable outside the region. I want to mention that in September all the estate wines were already finished just to remark the qualitative and commercial success of the winery.

Calabria Megonio 2009  

90/100 - € 25

100% Magliocco dolce. Matura in barrique per almeno 12 mesi. Rubino cupo. Al naso note mediterranee, kirsch, carrube e liquirizia. Trama gustativa fitta, solare nella progressione e nel finale succoso e maturo.


 

Calabria Megonio 2014 

92/100 - € 16

100% Magliocco dolce. Matura in barrique per 12 mesi. Rubino granato. Olfatto classico su carruba, kirsch, frutta rossa anche in confettura e un tocco di verde che alleggerisce. Trama gustativa compatta, saporita con progressione muscolare ma articolata.

Calabria Megonio 2019 

95/100 - € 16 

100% Magliocco dolce. Matura 12 mesi in barrique di Allier. Granato note intense di viole e ciliegie scure, spezie, chiodi di garofano e macchia mediterranea. Trama compatta, ricca con tannini ben articolati e giovanili che danno longevità e lunghezza al vino. Nel finale torna la macchia mediterranea.

Calabria Gravello 2009 

89/100 - € 25  

60% Gaglioppo, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, matura circa 12 mesi in barrique. Granato. Olfatto con note di sottobosco autunnale, leggera corteccia e il balsamico di eucalipto. Bocca elegante, rilassata, dotata di ottima bevibilità e un finale armonico e rarefatto.

Calabria Gravello 2014 

92/100 - € 25 

60% Gaglioppo, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, matura in barrique 12 mesi. Rubino leggermente granato. Olfatto nitido su note balsamiche e frutti rossi con un tocco speziato di curry. Trama fitta, equilibrata con tannini croccanti ma non invasivi e un finale piacevole dove torna l’eucalipto.

Calabria Gravello 2019  

94/100 - € 18 

60% Gaglioppo, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, matura un anno in barrique. Rubino granato. Al naso macchia mediterranea leggermente balsamica con tocchi di eucalipto. Frutto rosso e nero maturo. Trama gustativa equilibrata e armonica con tannini levigati e una progressione elegante e saporita.
