Travaglini, the most austere Gattinara

This Gattinara 2011 is a textbook example of how austere and profound a Nebbiolo can be.
There is something ancient about the name ‘Gattinara’. When you pronounce it a host of ideas and images come to mind, something authentic, unchangeable. While in the collective mind the name Burgundy implies something solid, sacred or religious, upper Piedmont – where Gattinara is presumably at the top – gives the impression of something unchangeable.
For sure, the irregular and 19th century shape of Travaglini’s bottle helps give this impression and it also tells the story of the family that helped create this wines. What is inside is even more impressive, the most austere Gattinara you’ll ever find. And this vintage, the product of a hot year that emboldened the wine without minimally making it heavier, is yet another confirmation that the mix of transparency and strength in this wonderful wine has rightfully made it famous and sought after the world over.
