The empathy of Taurasi Riserva Case d’Alto

Case d’Alto is a small winery in Grottaminarda that produces typical Irpinia wines. Among these is an excellent Taurasi Riserva.
I first tasted Taurasi Case d’Alto at this year’s Vinitaly and there was immediately an emotional connection. One that derived by the character and personality of the wine, an empathy that – usually – people like me who love art feel in front of a great work of art.
The work of art in question was produced by enologist Marco Esti at the small Case d’Alto winery in Grottaminarda owned by the De Luca family. The organic vineyards are small, 4.5h of Aglianico and 2h of Fiano, but situated in good areas and with sunny exposures. The grapes used for the Taurasi Riserva are from a centuries old, 6,00sqm vineyard in Case d’Alto in the Taurasi appellation. The soil has volcanic ash, the vines are trained using the old starseto system and few bottles are produced.
Of the five vintages tasted at the winery, here I have chosen the 2009 which, in my view, is ready to make its debut with its youthfulness, boldness, balance and long lifespan.
