Willi’s mountain Chardonnay

Cantina Tramin has a new wine: Troy, a Chardonnay Riserva 2015 that unites dynamism with vigor.
With its 300 members and 250 hectares of vineyards, the Cantina Tramin cooperative is a reference point for wine production in Alto Adige. Willi Stürz, the winery’s Kellermeister for the past 28 years, is considered a master of Alto Adige Gewürztraminer and his Nussbaumer is the definitive model for this wine. But he is much more than that because he is an enologist of great knowledge and sensitivity who has also created other types of wine starting with his fantastic Pinot Grigio Unterebner.
He has now come out with a new Tramin wine, a Chardonnay Riserva 2015. The grapes are from the same area as Nussbaumer, Sella, but from vineyards situated at an altitude of between 500-550m above sea level with a mixed soil of clay and chalk. Up until a few years ago, Chardonnay had difficulty ripening here and the wines it produced were fine and fresh. Climate change has changed this and the Chardonnay now achieves full maturity without losing any elegance and freshness.
The name Troy has nothing to do with the Homeric epic poem but means “path” in the local dialect.
Alto Adige Chardonnay Riserva Troy 2015
Made from Chardonnay grapes, fermented in barriques, 40% new wood, and matured in barriques for 11 months. The wine is then transferred into steel vats where it matures for another 22 months. The wine is clarified through spontaneous precipitation.
The wine has a bright, straw-yellow color and fine aromas of flowers, white peach and citrus enriched by delicate smoky and iodine nuances. The mouthfeel seems subtle but in reality has amazing dynamism and vigor with a balance between structure, freshness and elegance that is simply perfect. The finish is very long, bracing and salty.
