Virginie Saveyers Avignonesi Cantina Vini Toscana Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva Grande Annate is produced by Avignonesi only in the best years, hence the name. And 2004 certainly lived up to expectations.

Avignonesi is a Tuscan estate that recently converted to biodynamic farming. Its Belgian owner, Virginie Saverys, was behind this change which she began by first adopting organic methods. The estate is internationally known for producing two of the most important sweet wines in the world: Vinsanto di Montepulciano and Vinsanto Occhio di Pernice. Believe me when I say that when you taste these wines, if you can find them, you will be forever grateful.

The estate, naturally, also produces a Nobile di Montepulciano (vintage and reserve) and a nice Merlot as well as a Rosso di Montepulciano. Nobile Riserva Grande Annate, which is produced only after the best harvests, is a blend of Sangiovese from different terroirs, different vineyards with different densities, with a rigorous selection of grapes.

Sangiovese is a very great varietal that in Tuscan produces a variety of versions depending where it is cultivated. Montalcino, as well as Montepulciano with its Nobile di Montepulciano appellation, are two of the best areas. Over the past few years there has been a big push to boost quality in Montepulciano with excellent results, which we have written about often.
