Made from Verdicchio grapes and matured one the lees in stainless steel. If you speak with veteran Marchegiani sommeliers and restauranteurs, they will tell you with conviction that Salmagina from Zaccagnini is one of the greatest wines in the appellation. This is, in fact, true if you think back to Verdicchio of the past (like 1994 and 2001 which were outstanding) but debatable if you in regard productive consistency as a fundamental measuring stick. If you add in the estate’s apparent aversion to promotion and public relations, you will understand why it is little known among new wine enthusiasts. When everything goes right, the wine expresses in the best possible way its dual floral (gorse and lavender) and vegetal (anise seed) nature at the same time while remaining fresh and rich. This is thanks to the Salmagina vineyard, with its brackish soil. This is a wine to bring to wine appreciations courses to explain what a Verdicchio should be. Wonderful.
