According to Gianni Fabrizio, “there was an enormous leap in quality between 1982 and ’88 and Italian wine improved after the methanol scandal”.

This has a very intense nose with bold leather and barnyard notes followed by those of dark chocolate and licorice on a resin and balsamic background. The wine still has a pleasing mouthfeel and enchanting freshness with tannins that are somewhat tart in the finish. The persistence is quite long with notes of licorice root and rhubarb in the aftertaste. A real surprise.
