Fake wines of Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC

The Guardia di Finanza od Empoli discovers the illegal trafficking of counterfeit bottles. Confagricoltura Toscana: "Fraud that could debase the Tuscan wine".
Sicilian wine and Bulgarian labels: so a gang of criminals could earn 2 million euros by putting on the market fake bottles of Sassicaia of different vintages, from 2010 to 2015. The bottles were sold to foreign customers, especially Asian ones, with a 70% discount.
"A fraud that could have damaged and debased the image of Tuscan wine. We would like to thank the Guardia di Finanza that has allowed an organization that acted at an international level in order to falsify and commercialize the Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC wine, an excellence of oenology not only Italian, but worldwide". This is how Francesco Colpizzi, president of the Wine Federation of Confagricoltura Toscana, comments on the important investigation that led to the discovery of the illegal trafficking of counterfeit bottles.
"Fraud involving the excellence of the Tuscan agri-food industry is unfortunately very common, especially on valuable products that have a worldwide reputation and whose imitation is convenient for criminal organizations. This phenomenon is widespread everywhere, in Europe and outside - concludes Colpizzi - Despite the fact that the various Tuscan Wine Consortiums are increasingly involved in the surveillance and protection of their appellations, the current international regulatory framework does not allow today an integral defense of local production from episodes of plagiarism or counterfeiting".
