Towards the end of this very hot autumn, being to spend a weekend at Terme di Saturnia, we had to decide where to go for the couple of dinners we had available. The choice for the first dinner fell on Il Giardino di Caino, which is none other than the bistro of the very famous "Caino," a Michelin-starred bis restaurant, in Montemerano, in the province of Grosseto, in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma.

At the height of the summer season, you eat on a beautiful terrace filled with plants and flowers, while we, in late October, sat at the small iron tables set up on the very romantic street in front of the restaurant. For those who prefer it, there is also a lovely rectangular dining room with a dozen seats.

The gastronomic offerings in the kitchen of "il Giardino" are, of course, different from those of Ristorante Caino, but the same kitchen brigade and, of course, the ever-present Chef Valeria Piccini, Italy's historic and world-famous grand chef, are there to make it happen.

The menu is not divided among the different types of courses, but is a list of dishes and bottle to choose from. The offering is small, but in hindsight you will find that you will not have missed anything. All the dishes are territorial, at the very least very good, flavorful, tasty and colorful. But the lamb casserole, chicken cacciatore, spaghetti with spring onion, tripe, and lampredotto sandwich are outstanding, alone worth the trip.

The wine offerings are also good; remember, however, that the Cain Restaurant, just a stone's throw away, is home to an excellent wine cellar. If you want to drink high and more, don't be shy, ask and you will be given!

The service, run by a young, bright, smiling and indefatigable waitress, is punctual and polite. Perhaps, on busy evenings, she should be given some help, to avoid seeing her running around.

We had such a good time that at the end of dinner we immediately made reservations for the next evening-what do you say, did we do wrong?
