Vintage tastings (10): The 1950s

It is not easy to find wines from the 1950s that are still drinkable but certain names are a guarantee.
Although I may still consider myself to be young, this was a decade when many of us “mature” wine lovers were born. The first full decade after the Second World War was a glorious one, perhaps not trailblazing in regard to winemaking technology but which set the stage for constant improvements to come.
At the time there were only a few wines that were certain to have a glorious future full of satisfactions and what follows is a sampling. Being over 60 years old, the wines can only be found at auctions or directly from the producer, if they are willing to sell them. Thus pricing them is virtually impossible so here we will just give a ballpark figure.
