Wine tourism is a lovely way to spend a holiday and is a lifeline for producers during these difficult times.

The few days of holiday that I will take after closing our Essential Guide 2021 I will spend amid the vineyards, visiting estates and doing a little wine tourism. For those of you who read DoctorWine this will come as no surprise and for all of us who love wine it is to be expected. But there are also some other ulterior motives for my choice

The first is that going to wine estates means one is out in the open air, thus avoiding dangerous crowding and making social distancing easier. Many estates have adopted changes in order to welcome guests in the safest way possible, even in closed areas, also in the accommodation and restaurants that many of them offer so people can taste their products.

The secondi is that now more than ever, given the almost total lack of international tourism, it is important for wine lovers to help, in this way, those thousands of small producers who in these past months have lost much of the markets. To be close to them, when it is possible, at this time is a way to demonstrate concrete solidarity and support. Above all if you buy some of their wine before leaving.

This is what I intend to do. I will not go too far from Rome, where I live, and I have already arranged to visit estates in northern Lazio and Umbria. This will be my small contribution to wine tourism, above all to show my support, and I am sure the hospitality will be warm and pleasing, even if we cannot hug each other. We will taste wines, extraordinary olive oils, cheeses, cold cuts and other delights. The guest rooms may be simple but they will be immerged in the green landscape and we can do all this respecting the rules of common sense. And it will not cost a fortune, something else to take into consideration these days. I hope that many of you will do the same. For now, let’s try to spend some days in serenity, which is not always easy. And so, I wish you all a good holiday.
