Castorani, great history mixed with speed

Castorani is a wine estate in the hinterland of Pescara that today is owned by former Formula One racing driver Jarno Trulli.

Castorani is a wine estate that is blatantly marketing orientated when it comes to its line of production, which is vast, its media strategies, which are bombastic, its huge and flashy exhibition stands at trade fairs and pitch people it uses, one being its current owner former Formula One driver Jarno Trulli. Thus many simple wine lovers rightfully have difficulty approaching its wines without suspicion or bias. However, some of the wines are truly worth trying.

Under its glossy exterior is a 200-year-old estate situated in a great winegrowing area of Abruzzo that was created by Professor Raffaele Castorani. A native of Giulianova, he was one of Italy’s leading physicians in the 19th century, a recognized luminary who achieved international fame in his lifetime. The estate’s headquarters and some of its vineyards are in the town of Alanno located, as we said before, in a magnificent winemaking area in the Pescara hinterland.

The estate’s wine of production includes several selections of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo that are truly interesting, two of which we review here. The ‘premium’ whites and sparkling wines, however, are impeccably made but in some cases are ‘penalized’ by excessive packaging. The rest of production has always convinced us a bit less.
