Bulzoni, enoteca con cucina

The historic Bulzoni wine shop has been enriched by the addition of a simple and essential food menu, excellent dishes prepared to be paired with wine.

Bulzoni is a name known to all wine lovers as a point of reference to buy a bottle of wine at their shop on Viale Parioli 36. In fact, since 1929 the Bulzoni family has dedicated itself to selecting and selling wine , an activity and passion that has been handed down from the founder Emidio to his son Sergio and then to his grandsons Alessandro and Riccardo.

The shop has always been able to keep up with the times evolving from a shop selling bulk wines to one offering select, bottled wines. The current third generation understood that the time had come for a new restyling but one that was also inspired by a new concept and not just a need to modernize. The wine shop was thus enriched with a simple and essential food menu  thanks to the assistance and consultancy of Laurenzi Consulting, specialists in creating formats for restaurants.

Since October 12, it is now possible to sit among the shelves of wines and enjoy dishes that the owners themselves define as ‘’cooked for wine” . Throughout the day it is possible to have cheese or cold cut platters for 10 euros or pintxos (or pinchos) that cost between 2.50-3 euros. These are a kind of bruschetta with cardoncello mushrooms and sautéed chicory or ‘tuna’ rabbit with roast peppers. Tasty tapas are offered at 4.50-6 euros and my advice is to have the one with grilled Fiocco della Tuscia cheese on a bed of baked greens and cooked must or the one with Apulo-Calabrian pork sausage and potatoes.

The lunch and dinner menus are primarily composed of comfort food, super-traditional dishes that have the flavors of childhood and home. Nothing is too elaborated or innovative but rather tasty and reassuring. The menus are not long but will change or rotate over time and the dishes are always made with quality and style, starting with the choice of ingredients. The cheeses and cold cuts are from DOL and Orme, while the meats are from the renovated Bottega Liberati. While not my cup of tea, others rave about the pappardelle noodles with offal ragù sauce (11 euros) or, more to my liking, lasagna with seasonal vegetables (10 euros). Among the second courses is ossobuco with rice ‘al salto’, a kind of rice frittata (18 euros) and the classic chicken with peppers (14 euros).

The food does not overshadow the wine  that remains the main attraction of the new “Bulzoni Enoteca con Cucina” and for this reason they have adopted a very intelligent policy of charging a cork fee of only 7 euros for any wines on sale in the shop. This means you can enjoy a fine wine at the table at almost the same price as at home.

The wine list is very select and reflects the tastes of Alessandro, who had been in charge of wine acquisitions for over 20 years.  The list is subdivided into three different and distinct categories. The first is composed ofModern  wines,  those for people who like cleanliness and stability in aromas and tastes. These include Champagne Brut Louis Roederer (55 euros), La Manina from Manincor (18 euros) and Cabernet Sauvignon Montello by Loredan Gasparini (16.50 euros).

The second category is Old Style (Come una volta)  wines made with little human intervention both in the vineyard and the winery and they include Prosecco Casa Coste Piane (21 euros), Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Emidio Pepe (39 euros) and Etna Rosso ValCerasa from Bonaccorsi (32 euros).

The final category is Extreme  wines, produced by craft winemakers without the use of any chemical substances but using spontaneous fermentation, long maceration and no filtration. These wines are the most particular and loved by the owners who had an entire room created for them during the shop’s renovation in order to give them the utmost visibility. In this category you can find Vermentino Dettori (28 euros) and Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti Sgarzon from Foradori (40 euros).

It is our hope that this new formula will allow Alessandro and Riccardo to transmit their passion and expand the culture of fine wine and eating well.
