The Carolina wines of Brda

Brda is on the Slovenian side of Collio and here the  Jakončič estate produces very great wines, especially the whites of their Carolina selections: Rebula (Ribolla Gialla) and Carolina Bela, a Chardonnay-based blend.

The Jakončič estate has been producing wine uninterruptedly since 1847, from father to son. This has allowed them to hand down a tradition that makes the town of Goriška Brda a melting pot of Slovenian and Italian culture. Collio on the Italian side and Brda on the Slovenian one are basically the same, as is the frontier mentality of the winegrowers who basically have identical vineyards.

The vineyards are terraced and the vines are between 30 and 50 years old, while the practice of maceration, typical of the zone, has always reigned in the winery. Nevertheless, there has been some innovations with the cautious and precise use of barriques and temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The varietals are the classic ones for the zone which, being the winemaking lung of the Astro-Hungarian Empire, are the so-called noble ones like Chardonnay, Cabernet and Merlot, as well as the classic native varieties Picolit and Ribolla.

The two white wines we tasted truly have great class and are part of the Carolina line dedicated to the founder of the estate back in 1847.
