L'ambrosia di Salvatore Martusciello

Life is composed of times and cycles and highlighted by events that often change the direction of one’s existence. Meeting people in a certain place and at a precise moment is not always by chance. There are many theories and studies regarding the awareness of destiny including biosophy (bios+sophia=life+knowledge) which examines human existence by separating life into seven-year periods. It is a kind of manual for life, one which indicates the important periods, the intermediate ones and the challenges we have chosen. Encounters with friends, relatives, loves and colleagues thus plays into these seven-year periods.

For around four seven-year periods, Salvatore Martusciello worked at his family’s Grotta Del Sole estate where he set the mark for winemaking in the Campania region, exalting the value of grapes and wines that had all but been forgotten, restoring their dignity and history. Today he is a leading expert in wine from the Campi Flegrei and the area around Vesuvius and has broken away from the family to embark on a new life adventure together with his wife Gilda. He has given his name to this project that involves producing extremely territorial wines, wines that are “heavenly ambrosia”, as the poet Chiabrera described Flegrei wines they first time he tasted them. The estate is situated in the town of Quarto and with maniacal care produces some 87,000 bottles of wine a year with the aim of remaining firm and faithful to the territory and expressing a precise identity. Salvatore personally follows every step in the winemaking process and delegates nothing to others. He works in the vineyard, monitors his suppliers and is even involved in the deliveries of his wine so he can personally explain to his clients the characteristics of his wines which he loves like his own children. Even the names he has given his wines are the result of research and his love of the land: Settevulcani for his Piedirosso red and Falanghina white, Ottouve for his Lettere and Gragnano and Trentapioli for his sparkling Asprino di Aversa Spumantizzato. All this creates an image that underscores roots, dynamism and courage.

It was lovely to hear Salvatore take stock of his life and the lessons he has learned and it was also encouraging to hear the passion and determination with which he is moving his new project forward. No manual exists for the wisdom that derives from experience, no science, course nor study exists that will allow to know what life has in store for us.
