Fradiles: coraggiosa determinazione

Atzara is a small estate with 14 hectares of vineyards, both owned and leased, which produces some 20,000 bottles a year. It is run by Paolo Savoldo who, with hard work and passion, is bringing out the potential of the area of Mandrolisai, which has been overlooked for too long. Assisted by uncles and cousins (fradiles in Sardinian dialect), he manages vineyards that are for the most part very old and with vines of rare beauty including the classic Cannonau, Bovale and Monica grapes, which are those of the Mandrolisai DOC. There are also some old native grapes like Aniga di Sant’Antiogu, which is very similar to Carignano, as well as other white grapes like Nuragus, Moscato and then some that have not been fully identified. All this in a natural setting which includes oak forests that are centuries old and situated at an altitude of 550-650m above sea level where the soil is sandy and very light. In the cellar close attention is paid to preserve the characteristics of each grape.
The wines all have a distinct personality and are made with skill and bold determination. This latter aspect is evident the decision to produce a 100% Bovale, a grape which had for the most part been ignored in the area but which, as in this case, can produce important results.
