In the Irpinia town of Santa Paolina, Marilena Aufiero is focusing her production at Cantina Bambinuto on bold and structured Greco di Tufo wines.

Earth, sun, air and water are the four elements that are depicted on the walls of the entrance to the Bambinuto winery to underscore how their wines are produced respecting the cult of Nature. Since 2004, Marilena Aufiero has been making wine from the grapes of vines planted since 1999 on her seven hectares of land. Before then she sold her grapes to other wineries.

Her Irpinia estate is situated at an altitude of 550m above sea level in the town of Santa Paolina which is town tucked between Monte Fusco and Monte Miletto and is one of the eight recognized for the production of Greco di Tufo DOCG. In this area, the Greco di Tufo, the oldest varietal in southern Italy and the wine from which can almost be considered a red wine disguised as a white, fully expresses its key characteristics of high acidity combined with structure and boldness. And this thanks to the soil in Santa Paolina that is composed of clay and sand, nitrogen, calcium and potassium created in the Pliocene era.

The vineyards of this small winery are located in the districts of Contrada Picoli – where a wine of the same name is made – and Contrada Marotta with five hectares of Greco cultivated to have a low yield. At her estate, Marilena is assisted by enologist Vincenzo Mercurio while Professor Giancarlo Moschetti serves as the agronomist and is responsible for selecting the yeasts directly in the vineyard.

Cantina Bambinuto produces wines that are small gems. They need to age long in order to bring out the area’s unique territorial notes that distinguish every sip. These wines are also out of the norm with Greco di Tufo also made into a sparkling wine, a sweet dessert wine and distilled with quince apple. The estate also produces Falanghina and Aglianico wines from its own grapes.
