South of Brescia is a low hill, Monte Netto, which has particular characteristics that are very well interpreted wine-wise by the Danesi family at their San Michele estate.

Monte Netto’s name is misleading because it is not a mountain but a hill only 133m high. Nevertheless, it stands out due to its isolated position in the southern part of the Brescia province. It is quite a large area created by underground geological movements during the Ice Age and today is part of the Capriano del Colle and Poncarale townships and home to the little-known DOC appellation Capriano del Colle. The area is not very populated, being part of a regional park, and since water is not abundant only vines and little else are cultivated there. Monte Netto is home to the Danesi family’s estate San Michele where after 30 years they are focusing now more on producing quality wine, thanks above all to the enthusiasm of the new generation of Mario and Elena.

The estate’s vineyards have expanded over the years to reach their current size of 16 hectares, all of which are within the park and are being converted to organic methods. Although they cultivate many different varieties, red grapes are the majority for producing wine, in particular the Marzemino varietal that has historically been present on Monte Netto since the 16th century. Along with Marzemino, which is used for most of their reds, both pure and bended with Merlot and Sangiovese, there is a 100% Trebbiano among the whites that impressed us thanks to its unforgettable personally.

It is a wine that was born by chance after the 2012 harvest. Up until then the estate’s Trebbiano was usually blended with 10% Chardonnay to make their Netto Capriano del Colle DOC Bianco. However, due to a particular combination of sunny days and humid nights during harvest that year, some of the grapes were attacked by noble rot, a rare occurrence for the area, and it was decided to let them remain on the vine a little longer. After they were picked, a single-grape blend was created using the botrytis-infected grapes and those from the regular harvest. The result was so convincing that the estate decided to bottle it, only 2,000 bottles, and let its age a bit further. The wine was given the name Otten (Netto spelled backwards) and it really won us over.
