Garbole, la Valpolicella con l'H

In 1994, brothers Ettore and Filippo Finetto decided to make their dream come true and create – in Valpolicella – visionary, creative and rebellious wines all with the letter “H” in their name.

Brothers Ettore and Filippo Finetto decided 25 years ago to make wine with the grapes from their birthplace Tregnano, in Valpolicella, out of pure passion and the conviction that what they had to work with was extremely valid.

They focused their attention on bringing back historic Verona varietals and in 2000, after various experiments, they came out with their first wine under the Garbole brand, a Veneto Rosso IGP. This was made like an Amarone but without being part of that appellation that along with Corvina, a typical local variety, also included three other native varietals that has almost been abandoned. Hurlo represents the essence of the estate’s visionary, creative and rebellious philosophy. It is a wine that chases a dream to amaze, buck the trend, cross the line and break the mold.

Aside from this limited production, some 1,500 bottles a year, they also make another vital and crispy Veneto red, Heletto, which is surprisingly pleasing and wrapping, as well as a Amarone Riserva, Hatteso, made from the area’s more classic varietals and which is initially very austere before it opens wonderfully in the glass revealing tis fullness and boldness. Last but not least is their Recioto della Valpolicella, a nectar of concentration and sensuality.

The names of all their wines begin with the letter “H” which is unusual but serves as a simple common denominator that attracts attention. And this is not Garbole’s only original quirk. All the labels play on the colors of red and black, which are also the colors of the clothes worn by the brothers and their staff at the winery.

Another interesting particular is that the walls of the winery, all rigorously painted black, host a rotating art exhibition. The brothers’ connection with the art world is very strong and is evident in how they think, the way they work and the expression of their wines, all focused on creating something unique.

When asked “What do you seek in a wine?”, Ettore replied “A moment of pleasure”. The rest just follows suit.

I had the pleasure of getting to know their wines during a luncheon at Enoteca Achilli al Parlamento where Chef Massimo Viglietti, with talent and genius, perfectly paired Garbole wines with a specifically concocted menu simply called “Happetito”, which further exalted the philosophy and pleasure of this unusual winery.
