Dove trabocca il frutto

A few weeks ago, I presented (here) a brief presentation of the wines from the area of Collioure and Banyuls, in the southernmost part of Roussillon in southern France and a stone’s throw (literally) from Spain.

Collioure is a small fortified town build on a hill by the sea and is considered the border with the ‘French France’, which begins to the north with the beaches of Argelès.

The area has two primary activities: tourism, thanks to a sea that is similar to that of Sardinia (and is protected by being part of one of the oldest national parks, the Cerbére-Banyuls Marine Reserve); and agriculture.

There is no industry here only amazing vineyards of Grenache Noir, Gris and Blanche. They are incredible and extend down to the sea and its beaches, growing in a terrain of dark rocks and stones which limit yield to that of a Burgundy Grand Cru.

For example, the Domaine de la Rectorie, which has always stood out in the area for quality, has a yield of around 2,000kg per hectare.
